2025 World Bowls Indoor Championships: Day 2 wrap

by Connor Munnings on April 22, 2025

There were some mixed results for the Australian contingent at the 2025 World Bowls Indoor Championships at Aberdeen Indoor Bowls Club overnight, but Jack McShane and Kelsey Cottrell still remain well placed in all three disciplines.

McShane started his day in the singles discipline in fine form, defeating Japan’s 2023 World Bowls Championships representative Takashi Ohira 11-3 7-7.

However, the Right at Home Emerging Jackaroo’s next challenge was Scottish superstar and 2022 mixed pairs winner Stewart Anderson, who had been playing superbly up until that point.

Anderson was able to run away with the first set 8-2, but McShane fought valiantly in the second to win the last four ends and push the Scotsman to the last end.

In the end, Anderson was able to hold on and win the second set 6-5.

The New South Welshman is well placed in fourth position with four rounds to go.

Cottrell enjoyed a day off from the singles action and only needed to play the solitary mixed pairs match against Malta pairing Peter Ellul and Connie Rixon.

The Australian duo got off to a shaky start to drop the first set 6-3, but found their groove in the second stanza to run away with the set 10-2 and send the game to a three-end tiebreaker.

Malta immediately put the pressure on the green and gold by scoring a two in the first end of the tiebreaker before Cottrell and McShane netted a one.

The Australians were not able to score in the final end, with Ellul and Rixon securing a one to win the match.

Cottrell and McShane still sit in first place in their section and will look to win their final two matches to put themselves in a strong position to progress to the knockout rounds.
