Jack McShane after winning the 2024 Australian Indoor Championships

2025 World Bowls Indoor Championships: Day 5 wrap

by Connor Munnings on April 25, 2025

Australia still remains in the hunt for a gold medal at the 2025 World Bowls Indoor Championships, with Jack McShane progressing to the semifinals of the men’s singles discipline at the Aberdeen Indoor Bowls Club.

However, Kelsey Cottrell’s campaign was cut short in women’s singles, while the Australia duo were unable to advance past the quarter final in the mixed pairs.

Commencing his day against Spain’s Peter Bonsor, McShane came out firing, determined to repeat the success of Aron Sherriff in 2023 and claim the title for Australia.

The New South Welshman easily accounted for his opponent in straight sets 9-4 7-4 to progress to the quarter final against Ireland’s 2016 singles victor Andrew Kyle.

In what was a tight game from start to finish, McShane started strongly against the Irishman to win the first stanza 5-4.

However, Kyle fought back in the second set to win the first four ends and eventually claim the set 3-6.

Undeterred, McShane claimed a one and a two in the first two ends of the tiebreak to run out 3-1 victor and set up a showdown with South Africa’s Jason Evans in the semifinal.

It was a tough day on the carpet for Cottrell, who went down in straight sets in the quarter final to an in-form Emily Kernick from England 4-5 5-7.

It was a similar story in the mixed pairs quarter final, with England’s duo of Kernick and Dominic McVittie downing the green and gold pairing in straight sets 2-9 5-7.

England were the big movers of the day, with McVittie defeating Scotsman Stewart Anderson to progress to the semifinal in the men’s singles and the England pairing also claiming victory over Stewart Anderson and Claire Anderson in the mixed pairs to book their spot in the grand final against Wales’  Lauren Gowen and Ross Owen.
