2024 Nationals: Day 7 wrap

by Val Febbo on October 14, 2024

With just one round to go of the 2024 Australian Senior Sides Championships, plenty of history is on the line as two states stand clear on top of the respective men’s and women’s ladders after a pulsating day at Club Tweed.

Women

Victoria are in the box seat to close in on the competition’s first ever three-peat of Betty Collins OAM trophies after a mixed day in the border city.

They kicked off the day with an important win over South Australia, who were second in the overnight standings, before being upset by the ACT 66-59 in the final round of the day to set up what could be a huge final morning.

Victoria will face the winless Northern Territory in the deciding round.

Queensland sit equal with the Victorians on wins, behind by two and a half rink points, and will be aiming to apply an abundance of pressure on their southern counterparts in their concluding tie against New South Wales.

Following on the table are New South Wales on a quartet of salutations, with South Australia and the ACT behind on split ledgers.

Tasmania, Western Australia and the Northern Territory make up the table.

Men

South Australia are primed to become the fourth state to win the coveted John Dobbie AM trophy after staving off significant challenges across the two encounters of the day.

The morning session saw a scare run through the club as a Victorian player collapsed mid match against South Australia, causing the match to be abandoned and points split.

Thankfully, the player has made a recovery.

The South Australians moved their attention to the defending champions in Queensland in the penultimate round and managed to overcome a tough challenge with a 55-48 win on the masterboard.

Should the red, blue and gold squad defeat the winless Tasmania on Tuesday morning, they will be crowned champions.

New South Wales would finish the day in second place following wins over Western Australia and the Tasmanians, with Queensland following them in third.

The two states will jostle it out in the final round to give themselves the best chance at overall glory.

Victoria and the ACT follow on the table, with Western Australia in sixth place.

The Northern Territory and Tasmania make up the ladder.
