2024 World Bowls Junior Indoor Championships: Day 5 recap

by Connor Munnings on December 7, 2024

The Australian duo of Kira Bourke and Kane Nelson have booked their spot in the knockout stages of all disciplines at the 2024 World Bowls Junior Indoor Championships.

Having confirmed their spot in the mixed pairs quarterfinals a day earlier, all eyes were on the women’s and men’s singles disciplines.

Needing to win to ensure her place in the finals, Bourke put on a determined performance to defeat Hong Kong China’s Emily Chan 2-10 5-4 6-0 in her final sectional game.

This secured her third spot in Section 3 with four wins and two losses, and put her in a matchup with Guernsey’s Emily Rich in the first round of finals.

The Club Tweed product played superbly against her Guernsey opposition, cruising to the quarterfinal 9-0 8-3.

She will face Scotland’s Sophie McGrouther, who finished first in Section 1, in her quarterfinal.

Despite qualifying for the men’s singles quarterfinals in second position in Section 3, it was a down day for Nelson who was unable to continue his undefeated record for the tournament.

Singapore’s Harriman Yuen was simply too consistent for the Queenslander with a 3-8 4-5 victory, while it was a tight tussle in Nelson’s loss to Hong Kong China’s Man Pok Chung, going down 6-2 4-8 0-6.

The Capalaba product will play Malaysia’s Amirul Danial Abdul Rahim in the quarterfinal.
