2025 World Bowls Indoor Championships: Day 4 wrap
Both Kelsey Cottrell and Jack McShane have advanced to the knockout stages of their singles disciplines at the 2025 World Bowls Indoor Championships, while the green and gold pairing stormed through the mixed pairs play-off to book themselves a spot in the quarter final.
In what was a vital day on the carpet at the Aberdeen Indoor Bowls Club, Cottrell and McShane played some quality bowls to keep themselves in the competition.
Despite comfortably winning the first set 12-6, it was not all smooth sailing for Cottrell in her matchup against Jersey’s Rachel Macdonald.
Macdonald fought back hard in the second stanza to restrict the Queenslander to just two shots and claim the set 7-2.
In a cracking tiebreaker, Cottrell got things underway with a two in the first end before her Jersey opponent secured a three to put her nose in front heading into the final end.
However, the Right at Home Jackaroo steadied her nerves to pick up a one and force an extra end to eventually win the tiebreaker 4-3.
Going into her final sectional singles match against Namibia’s Diana Viljoen, Cottrell could not concede top position in her section.
Viljoen, who had not won a game up until that point and had nothing to lose, came out firing against the Australian and went on to win in straight sets 5-6 5-9.
Despite the loss against Viljoen, Cottrell finished on top of her section and advanced to the quarter final where she waits to see who her opponent is.
With the pack right on his heels, McShane couldn’t afford to slip up in his singles matches, but the young superstar picked up where he left off the previous day to put on a dominant display.
Conceding the first end of the match against Macao China’s Johnny Yuk Kay Ng, McShane was a man on a mission, winning in straight sets 14-1 11-1.
The New South Welshman continued his fine form in his second game, defeating Namibia’s Christo Ronald Steenkamp in straight sets 8-1 6-5.
McShane finished second in his section behind rampaging Scotsman Stewart Anderson, who didn’t drop a set in sectional play.
He will now face off with Spain’s Peter Bonsor in the play-off round to see who qualifies for the quarter final.
In the mixed pairs play-off, the Cottrell McShane duo were in superb touch to record a 9-1 7-5 victory over Malaysia’s Muhammad Haiqal Bin Azami and Emma Firyana Binti Saroji.
Australia will now play England in the quarter final.
